The Discipline of Information Technology considers research to be a fundamental aspect of its mission.

The Discipline of Information Technology in the National University of Ireland Galway is actively engaged in research on topics such as: Artificial Intelligence; Machine Learning; Human-Computer Interaction; Medical Informatics; Games; Networks & Communications; Image Processing; Simulation; Evolutionary Computation; Energy Informatics; Information Retrieval.

PhD Research Scholarship Opportunities in Information Technology, 2012-13

There are several research scholarship programmes that would suit excellent candidates who are interested in conducting PhD research in Galway:

• Hardiman Research Scholarships: Fully funded for 4 years, with a stipend of €16,000 p.a. plus fees, available in NUI Galway only. Deadline has passed:17 Dec 2012. More information here.
• Irish Research Council Scholarships: The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme. Deadline has passed: 14 March 2013. More information here.
• College Scholarships: Awarded for research in the College of Engineering & Informatics, NUI Galway, to candidates from anywhere. Deadline: 24 May 2013. More information here.

Application procedures differ for each programme, but in all cases you should begin by identifying and contacting a member of academic staff whose research interests are aligned with yours, to discuss potential research project topics.

Research Areas

Computational Intelligence Research (CIRG)

The CIRG group is currently working on a number of projects in the areas of Collaborative Filtering and Information Retrieval; Data Mining ; Evolution and Stability of Cooperation in Artificial Life Societies; Agent-Based Systems; and Web-based Education

Computational Mathematics

Current work is focused on algorithms in Discrete Event Dynamical Systems, and the use of symbolic algebra packages to investigate properties of tropical algebras.

Computing in Society

We are researching the impacts of new technologies on our lives, the issues raised, and how we best might exploit our technical resources to contribute positively to society.

Enterprise Computing Research (ECRG)

Enterprise Computing Research Group in the Department of IT

Machine Learning / Data Mining Group

We conduct research on Machine Learning techniques for with automatic development and refinement of hypotheses/models based on experience, and we apply these techniques to innovative applications in Data Mining.

Medical Informatics Research

The research group has strong links with both the Mater Hospital in Dublin and the University Hospital in Galway.

Performance Engineering Laboratory (PEL)

The PEL research group are active in a number of research areas including the evolution of computer and data networks with a particular focus on multimedia.

System Dynamics Research Group

The aim of this SFI-funded project is to design and develop novel computational approaches for modelling complex systems.

Our team is designing an innovative multi-method agent-based simulator, and drawing on a range of problem areas including operations management, economics, social network analysis and distributed computing. We are also exploring how we can use computational methods in an innovative way as part of games engines.
